PTSD & Cannabis: Watch This Video To Learn More

“Marijuana use for medical conditions is an issue of growing concern. Some Veterans use marijuana to relieve symptoms of PTSD and several states specifically approve the use of medical marijuana for PTSD. However, controlled studies have not been conducted to evaluate the safety or effectiveness of medical marijuana for PTSD. Thus, there is no evidence at this time that marijuana is an effective treatment for PTSD. In fact, research suggests that marijuana can be harmful to individuals with PTSD.” – U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

The video below does a good job of showing what life might be like for some U.S. vets who are suffering from PTSD. Watch the video and let us know what you think in the comments.

Watch U.S. Vets With PTSD Smoke Weed

Traumatic stress comes in all shapes and sizes and affects everyone differently. The Department of Veterans Affairs website states that there are numerous problems associated with marijuana use.

  1. “Marijuana use is associated with medical and psychiatric problems. These problems may be caused by using, but they also may reflect the characteristics of the people who use marijuana.”
  2. “Medical problems include chronic bronchitis, abnormal brain development among early adolescent initiators, and impairment in short-term memory, motor coordination and the ability to perform complex psychomotor tasks such as driving.”
  3. “Psychiatric problems include psychosis and impairment in cognitive ability. Quality of life can also be affected through poor life satisfaction, decreased educational attainment, and increased sexual risk-taking behavior. Chronic marijuana use also can lead to addiction, with an established and clinically significant withdrawal syndrome.”

The Green Rush team is full of people who come from many different backgrounds.

Recently, one of our team member’s family members showed us this video from Stranger Buds that features U.S. Veterans with PTSD smoking weed. Although cannabis use is not yet approved by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, post-traumatic stress disorder affects a very large amount of people worldwide and cannabis has proven itself to be an effective solution for many people.

With so many people needing legitimate help and guidance when it comes to cannabis and trauma, we encourage our readers to reach out if ever in need. We’re able to connect our fans and readers to quality budtenders and medical marijuana consults if needed.

Rapper Weed Is A Real Thing

Berner – Girl Scout Cookies

Berner has the most popular and successful cannabis collaboration in the game with the Cookies Family. The Cookies Family are the originators of Girl Scout Cookies and other Cookies strains such as Sunset Sherbert, Gelato and Cherry Pie. These hybrids are respected around the world because of their one of a kind terpene profiles. Cookies has become a brand on its own with a full merchandise line. These days, we are hard pressed to find someone who has smoked weed, that hasn’t smoked cookies or at least heard of it in passing.

THC Farms – Rapper Kush

Rapper Kush is an exclusive strain from THC Farms. This Tacoma based farm is designed for the hip hop communities love of dense kushy flower. Rapper Kush is a woody kush that looks like a snow capped Washington mountain, Culture Magazine reports. This strain will put the entire crew on the same level or take you above the rim if you’re smoking solo.

Wiz Khalifa – Khalifa Kush

The real Khalifa Kush might not be available to anyone but the Wiz himself, according to Leafly, but the strains that claim the name usually resemble a OG Kush descendant with pine, earth and citrus aromatics.

Three of RMR’s most seasoned smokers tested the strain in Las Vegas and concluded it wasn’t worth the hype. Quality control matters for agricultural products like cannabis,  given KK that was over six-months-old and cost us over $20 for a “gram” preroll. Sometimes brands just don’t live up to the hype.

Paul Wall – Satellite OG Kush

Paul Wall is a rapper from Houston, who many know as the “grillz” guy. Wall still sells diamond teeth, but he’s got a few other business ventures now, including his own strain of weed called Satellite OG, per Forbes. This indica will relax your body and boost your mood. The aromatics resemble candy pine, according to Leafly.

B-Real – Tangie

Tangie is a sativa strain that gained notoriety in the 90’s, Leafly reports. B-Real from Cypress Hill owns his own dispensary in California called Dr. Greenthumb. His version of Tangie took 3rd place at the High Time Cannabis Cup in 2015, The Cannabist reports. Tangie is a citrus lovers dream, with tangerine and orange soda aromas and a fruity flavor. Tangie is the mother to one of GreenRush’s most unique strains, Tangelina Jolie.

Snoop Dogg – Snoop’s Dream

This is the result of crossing Master Kush and blue dream. This flower produces large yields with a berry-riddled kush terpene profile that even the Doggfather himself can’t resist. One of our favorite Snoop’s Dreams comes from Treehawk Farms in Washington state. Yielding around 5+ pounds per light, this strain is potent, tasty, and worth testing this holiday season. GreenRush has produced a Snoop’s Dream cut that reeked of berry punch.

What Is A Vaporizer? #CatchTheRush

What Is A Vaporizer?

The idea behind vaporizers is to ignite cannabis using a heating coil instead of an open flame. A vape pen is exactly what it sounds like, a pen-shaped device that contains a rechargeable battery and heating element.

It didn’t take long for the convenience and discrete aspects of e-cigarettes to be adapted for cannabis concentrates, and it’s quickly becoming a normal way to consume cannabis. If you’re looking to get a vape pen and see what the rage is all about, here is a quick start guide for new users.

There are three kinds of vape pens you can get:

Thereare pens designed for vape cartridges. You buy the battery unit separately and the cartridges are screwed on like the lid of a beverage. The battery is recharged and reused and the cartridges are easily switched out if you want to smoke something specific in the morning and something during the night.

Second, are units designed to manually load your own cannabis or concentrate on a per hit basis. These are more advanced and left for someone who is familiar with dabbing.

Third, is a fully disposable unit with everything included. The battery, heating element and oil are all self-contained in the device and can be disposed of when it’s empty. This is the easiest entry point for vaporizing and doesn’t take much explanation. Just open the package, suck on the mouthpiece and enjoy the experience.

How To Select A Battery

If you want to avoid the full disposable unit, I suggest purchasing a push button battery. Optimum and Vuber make ok devices. The device pictured above has three different heat settings, depending on the amount of oil you want to inhale per hit or the type of cartridge you have. It has an LED light that lets you know when the battery is fully charged or dead. You can turn the device off with five quick clicks of the button. This saves power and keeps them from activating within your pocket or purse.

These usually run between $15 and $20 and can be found at most recreational shops. Find a budtender you trust and ask them for recommendations.

How To Select And Use A Cartridge

This decision can be more difficult to make because of the sheer amount of options you have. Type of concentrate, brand, and price are just a few of the options you must weigh before making a decision.

Please take into consideration that price points can be different from shop to shop, but price points for a quality half gram cartridges range from $40 to $60, usually. That seems expensive, but cartridges will last upwards of two weeks for the average user.

Using a cartridge is easy. Just line up the threads and screw it on top of the pen. Set your temperature on the battery, and push and hold the button to inhale. The LED light will light up, letting you know it’s heating and will disable automatically after each hit or after you let go of the button.

Setting the temperature is important for the vaping experience you’re looking for. The lowest temperature is designed to be as discrete as possible, uses the least amount of oil per hit and allows the strain’s taste and flavor to shine through. This setting is best for rookie vapers or smokers.

The middle setting will allow you larger hits, but you use a bit more oil and get less flavor.

The highest setting is designed for veterans who are looking to blow fat clouds and get stoned to the bone. This setting will sour the taste, use more oil, but you’re getting the largest hits possible from a vape pen.

Each setting has positives and negatives depending on your desired experience. I suggest trying them all out in every situation to see which combination best suits you.

Ganesh Vapes & GreenRush Concentrates A Winning Combination

BHO concentrates are a staple in the recreational scene. Many of the notable extraction companies use butane to extract the THC, CBD, and terpenes from the plant material which leaves the final solvent that is dabbed. The excess butane and other impurities are purged out with heat and what’s left is your concentrate.

Slight variations of extraction variables paired with different cannabis strains is what gives you all of your many concentrate varieties. The Oregonian released a story citing a study by Portland State University chemistry professor Robert Strongin. The article states carcinogens are released when terpenes present in butane hash oil (BHO) are vaporized on nails at temperatures above 750 degrees Fahrenheit and 932 degrees Fahrenheit.  Methacrolein and benzene are the carcinogens in question, respectively.

The Oregonian doesn’t specify what brand of concentrates were used in the study, only the terpene profiles and that they were BHO. “We don’t want to say things like this are just bad,” Strongin told The Oregonian. “It really depends on the user.”

The most popular type of equipment used for low temp dabbing is a type of nail called a “quartz banger,” which is a small bucket that you scoop your dabs into. Pair this with carb cap that acts as a seal to retain as much heat in the nail as possible to melt the dab and cut down on waste.  Quartz is the most popular because it heats up relatively quickly and has great retention properties.

The temperature goal for successful low temp dabbing is between 350 and 400 degrees Fahrenheit, High Times reports. This allows the cannabinoids and terpenes to melt all the way; providing the full spectrum of the strain’s effect without burning your throat and scorching the flavor.

The smaller the dab, the less you will want the nail to heat up, and vice-versa. You will know if your nail is too hot because the remnant oil will be a singed and black instead of warm and brown. It should be easily cleaned up with a Q-tip. Cleaning your nail after every dab will keep your nail fresh for months and keep your dabs tasting clean. An electronic nail provides an easier way to experience low temp dabs, but it can be costly if you want a reliable set-up. Consistently dabbing a torch and nail at low temperatures is absolutely possible, it just takes research and practice.

“Preference is part of it, but you never want to get any concentrate too hot, Linn said.” “It burns away the terpenes, which in effect takes away from the taste and the potency of the product.”

There are several factors to consider when your cooling down your nail, but the most important part is to have the same starting point for every dab; so heat the nail red hot, until it’s slightly glowing orange. A nail that is visibly glowing orange or red will be around 800 degrees Fahrenheit, per High Times. Let it cool down from this point for anywhere from 45 seconds to a minute and 30 seconds depending on the thickness of your nail and the size of your dab. Linn explains there will be a trial and error period for each nail and type of solvent (rosin, distillate, shatter, etc,) to zero in the heat to maximize the taste and effect.

“Most people take minimally sized dabs compared to some of the dabs I’ve taken,” Linn continued, “it depends on where people are at with their tolerance level.”

Frequently Asked Questions – Local Roots

Do I need a medical card to shop at Local Roots?
Nope! All Local Roots locations offer recreational marijuana and are open to the public, 21 & over with a Valid ID.

How does Local Roots obtain it’s cannabis?
In accordance with state law, we do not grow our own cannabis and/or produce any cannabis products. Instead, Local Roots works closely with numerous farms and producers across Washington to bring you a wide range of high-quality cannabis products. Steps are taken to ensure that all product coming through our stores is safe, legal, and, of course, something we would enjoy ourselves.  Every product offered at Local Roots has been tried by someone in the company to ensure quality before being sold.

Can I purchase cannabis seeds or clones or plants?
Currently, no. Local Roots stores only carry and sell closed and sealed cannabis products in accordance with WA State law.

Cannabis is an annual flowering plant in the Cannabis genus. Humans have harvested it throughout time for industrial fiber, oil, recreation, spiritual pursuits, and as medicine. Cannabis is categorized into two types for consumption: Cannabis Sativa and Cannabis Indica. These plants contain cannabinoids, which are the active ingredients in cannabis. The most commonly known cannabinoids are THC, CBD, and CBN.

How do I determine the proper dosage?
Edible forms of cannabis are measured into milligrams (mg). For people with a low tolerance, a recommended starting dose is 5-10mg. Other forms of cannabis (flower, joints, concentrates like wax, shatter, etc.) are sold by the half-gram(0.5 g), full (1 g) gram, an eighth (3.5 g), a quarter (7 g), half-ounce (14 g) and full ounces (28 g). Due to personal body chemistry and individual tolerance levels, other forms of cannabis intake (smoking, vaporizing, dabbing, etc.) will vary considerably from person to person. Please feel free to ask your budtender any questions you might have about marijuana dosage!

Your products have percentages of THC/THCA/CBD listed. Why is that and should I care about it?
In accordance with WA State Law, all farms and producers are required to responsibly tests their cannabis for levels of cannabinoids such as THC and CBD called a potency analysis. At this point, the product(s) are also treated to a microbiology and foreign matter screening to gain quality assurance ratings. Only “Class A” ratings are allowed to be sold for any cannabis product in accordance with state law. Potency analysis test results are listed daily on our menus and can always be found on the product packaging. Microbiology and foreign matter test results are available upon request.

“THC” refers to the amount of THC in the trichome crystals on the outside of the plant. “CBD” , likewise. The “A” sometimes listed with these percentages refers to the “Active” amount or the actual amount received by the individual during the act of burning and inhalation. At this point, lab analysis varies between labs and there is no state oversight of the labs yet, thus these percentages (especially on flower) don’t often reflect the strength or effects of the corresponding high.

Low Temp Dabs: What You Should Know

Anyone who has been dabbing or smoking concentrates for a long time has most likely taken dabs off a hot nail. Red hot, or even being close to red hot, isn’t the proper way to dab.

Nobody knows any better at first. You attempt to dab like you smoke weed, just put heat to solvent and get high, but through the years of trial and error and learn there is a lot more subtlety and technique to dab the correct way.

If you’ve ever heard of low temp dabbing, now is the time to learn what’ve you’ve been missing. The easiest way to make sure your dab is low temperature is simply by using your stopwatch app on your smartphone. Set it up and fire up your torch. Heat your torch up and when it starts glowing red/orange, hit the lap button.

Now you’re letting the nail cooldown watch your timer.

The amount of time you let the nail cool down really depends on the type of nail, let’s just say it’s quartz. Most quartz nails take at least 45 seconds to cool down before you hit the correct temperature.

If it’s thick like a 4mm, then you will want to wait up to a minute and thirty seconds.

There will be a three to five dab practice period when you’re zeroing the timing of your nail.

If you see the remaining oil in your nail is black or its crusted to the nail, it was too hot when you did you dab. You want a warm brown puddle for remains. This will make for easy clean up with Q-tips. If you didn’t get it all cleaned quite quickly enough, you can burn off the rest with your torch with ease.

Learn more about the benefits of low-temperature dabs and techniques with these materials.
