Remembering NFL Great YA Tittle With Some Blue Dream*

The NFL and football world lost a true pioneer of the sport recently when Y.A. Tittle passed away at age 90. Tittle played college ball at LSU and was drafted as the 6th overall pick in the 1948 draft by the Baltimore Colts. Y.A. Tittle was truly ahead of his time when he entered the league. During a time when power running was the name of the game, Tittle set the league on fire with his arm.

“Tittle has the attitude of a high school kid, with the brain of a computer,” Frank Gifford said of Tittle, another legendary NFL quarterback.

Tittle’s career blossomed when he joined the San Francisco 49er’s and became the full-time starter in 1953 and in 1954 he became the first NFL player to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. As a 49er he was part of the famed “Million Dollar Backfield” and was voted to his first two pro bowls.

When Tittle was traded to the New York Giants in 1961, he was considered past his prime by most. He went on to have the best statistical seasons of his career; winning the league MVP award twice while leading the Giants to three division titles. Tittle never won any championships during his 17-year career, but his contributions to the game are long-lasting. He is still tied for the lead in the single-game passing touchdowns in 2017. At the time of his retirement Tittle held the following records, per Wikipedia:

Career passing yards (28,339)

Career passing touchdowns (212)

Career pass attempts (3,817)

Career pass completions (2,118)

Passing touchdowns in a season (36)

Passing touchdowns in a game (7)

Career total offense (29,338)

Games played (176)
