Terpenes and Cannabis… What Does Terpy Even Mean?

The cannabis industry is growing at a rapid rate. Technology has enabled farmers and extractors to be innovative, developing more methods for growing and extraction. With many farmers utilizing progressively more scientific methods of growing cannabis and extracting its oils, the role of terpenes has come into prominence.

You may hear someone say something is “terpy,” to indicate the strong aromatic quality of a certain bud or extract.

But what does that really mean?

Terpenes are natural essential oils secreted by all plants and are also responsible for the smell and flavor in plants and fruit.

In a similar way that aromatherapy is known as an effective form of stress or anxiety relief, THC and terpenes working together relax or stimulate your senses. A chemical reaction occurs between your body and the presence of terpenes combined with THC to produce varying effects.

Overall, we’re still not completely sure what all terpenes can do to help (or harm) the body. So far, we know about the presence of the endocannabinoid system. This system allocates THC and terpenes to different sites on the body to amplify the therapeutic aspects of the herb in a process known as the “entourage effect.”

Popular Terpenes

Myrcene

You definitely already know this terpene as it exists in lemongrass, cannabis, and even hops. This is where you’ll find prominent citrus and earthy aromas. This terp is largely associated with pain reduction, and quelling inflammation as well as muscle spasms.

Limonene

As the name suggests, this terpene represents the tart, yet sweet scent you’ve definitely encountered. This lemon-lime flavored terp can aid users with depression and anxiety while also containing antibiotic and antioxidant properties.

Alpha-Pinene

Alpha-Pinene is you guessed it—that sweet pine aroma. You can find it emanating from several coniferous trees, as well as several stinky nugs. This terpene interacts with your body by promoting memory retention and alertness. It can also be utilized to improve lung function in some patients with asthma.

Linalool

In more rare cases you will detect an herbal stench akin to lavender. This is the sneaky, yet helpful terpene known as linalool. Known to provide sedative and anti-anxiety properties, users with epilepsy and similar conditions should seek out cannabis products with this terp present.

Caryophyllene

Probably the most aromatically notorious terpene of all is caryophyllene which provides that “skunky” odor. In more classic strains you may notice this gassy aroma, taking note that it may help protect cells lining your digestive tract.

Humulene

In the realm of essential oils present in both hops and in cannabis, humulene is undoubtedly the culprit. If you’ve ever taken a whiff of some weed that smells like a hoppy beer, take note, because this terpene helps control your appetite as well as fight cancer cells.

The medical benefits of terpenes in combination with cannabinoids is a field still under heavy exploration. Other common terpenes include terpineol, eucalyptol, menthol, and citronellol that each play similar roles in affecting your body through smell and taste. As research continues, there are endless possibilities for finding holistic solutions to several medical conditions with the right kind of cannabis products.

Things To Know When Buying Dabs In Washington

Even when it comes to concentrates and other extracts, many people are currently visiting weed stores and asking for whatever has the highest THC. While the THC percentage is in fact a vital part of the purchasing experience, there is more to value than just high percentages.

One of the first and most important things you should be looking for at weed stores is who the experts are.  You’ve got to find budtenders you can trust!

Identify Dabbing Experts

By now you should be shopping for dabs and have gotten used to asking the budtender for information about what they like. If you don’t ask the budtender about what they’re smoking or dabbing, how can you know that they’re not feeding you a blind recommendation? Always engage in a thoughtful conversation with your budtenders so that they can identify themselves as dabbing experts or send you to the right person.

When it comes to RSO, CBD, and other medical marijuana-centric products, it is especially important to ask for a staff member who has experience using and selling these types of items.

It is extremely important to look and listen for a budtender or manager that is educated about the products people are asking about. If a staff member can only describe the products as dank, top-shelf, great, fire, super good, awesome, or any other basic positive adjective, double down on another question to see if they really know if it’s worth spending money on.

Consumers aren’t able to view the product outside of packaging in Washington state so it is extremely important for cannabis industry staff to be able to communicate accurate information. Overdosing on cannabis can ruin someone’s perspective and is one of the major hurdles holding many people back when it comes to legalization.

I follow this simple rule when it comes to dabs. If the budtenders haven’t tried it and nobody actually knows if the product is effective or tastes good, I’ll generally pass until next time. When it comes to our products though, GreenRush extracts with flower and our price point is usually cheaper than other top-shelf extract companies.

Brand Knowledge

There are seemingly thousands of brands that work in cannabis here in Washington. Many of these companies, ours included, offer cannabis in flower and oils. Some even take it a step further by creating edibles, lotions, topicals, and other cannabis-based products. If you keep an eye out for brands that focus more on education, flavor, experience, or lifestyle, you should be able to set yourself up for success.

GreenRush’s extracts are pesticide-free and our facility is known for cleanliness. If you’d like to know specific terpene profiles for our flower or oils, send us a DM on Instagram or Facebook.

Flavor & Terpenes Matter More Than THC %

For the last two years, Washington’s cannabis industry has battled with the importance of the THC percentages. All cannabis in Washington has to get tested at an accredited facility and there have been quite a few issues with this process thus far. Although THC predominately focuses on psychoactive effects, terpenes and THC combine to create a synergistic effect that can dictate specific types of effects or highs.

Adults 21 and over can purchase up to one ounce of usable cannabis flower, 16 ounces of cannabis-infused edibles in solid form, 72 ounces of cannabis drinkables, and 7 grams of cannabis concentrates.

If you’re a registered medical cannabis patient, the limits are:

Three ounces of usable cannabis flower, forty-eight ounces of cannabis-infused edibles in solid form, two hundred sixteen ounces of cannabis drinkables, and twenty-one grams of cannabis concentrates, per the Washington State Department of Health.

How To Buy Weed In Washington When You Can’t Find Any GreenRush

The next time you leave town,  you might be out of luck finding any GreenRush products. If you have to step out of your comfort zone and buy something else. THC numbers are just a small part of the equation. As an experienced cannabis user, I’ll explain what you should be looking for when you’re buying weed in an unfamiliar place.

Find Budtenders You Trust When Buying Weed In Washington

I’m just going to say what everyone knows. Not all budtenders are equal, and some downright suck at their jobs and just look blown to be at work. Just because you love getting high doesn’t mean you’re educated about cannabis, it just means you love getting high.

Find a budtender that is educated about the products you’re asking about. If they can only describe cannabis as “that fire” or “dank” visit after visit, you might want to take what they say with a grain of salt. Find someone who can articulate strain knowledge in a digestible manner. Find a budtender that can teach you about: terpenes, cannabis genetics, grow methods, how concentrates are made, the differences between concentrates their stores brand specifics and know the in’s and out’s of recreational compliance. You can’t look at the product outside of packaging in Washington, so budtenders are extra important to relay product information.

Find A Backup Brand

Do some research online. Many brands have awesome websites and Instagram accounts aimed at product education. Attend vendor days and tour grow facilities.  Grill salespeople and brand ambassadors about the quality of their products. Look for transparent brands that do a great job of dispersing product information there’s a good chance you’re finding safe products.

Terpenes & Cannabinoids > THC

Terpenes matter. THC packs the psychoactive effects, but it’s how THC and cannabinoids interact with terpenes that dictates strain-specific effects. Terpenes produce the common aromas we associate with cannabis. Hazes have high amounts of terpinolene. Citrus aromas come from terpenes like myrcene and limonene. That sharp pine aroma comes from pinene. Some terpenes carry more THC across the blood-brain barrier, which is why a strain can be extra effective, despite having low THC numbers. Find a strain you can’t get enough of? Find out what terpenes were present and you can shop for those terpenes in other brands and strains.

Looks > Numbers

When there’s smoke, there’s fire. Does it look pretty? Buy it. If the buds are full, fluffy, and covered in trichomes, buy it. Even if the label says it has 12 percent THC. Pretty weed with low numbers is always a better bet than bammer with high numbers on a label. It’s like drinking Everclear out of plastic handle because it has a higher alcohol content instead of enjoying Tito’s or Grey Goose for a little more money for the smooth taste.

In The End, You Just Have To Smoke

The barrier to entry for cannabis education is still high, and there is a steep learning curve involved. At the end of the day, you can do all the research in the world, but you never really know how weed will affect you until you smoke it. So find something you vibe with, clear your schedule, and take a chance. At the very worst, you get too high and reality gets weird for a few hours. If that happens, just drink some water and hang on for the ride. You’re not going to die and it’ll build some character. (This happens to me, at least twice a month.) Take my advice from above, and eventually, you’ll find a cannabis purchasing formula that works for your lifestyle. There might be some missteps on the way, but it happens to everyone.

How to Make Cannabis-Infused Grilled Cheese | HERB Video Recipes

If you’re like us, you’ve probably been eating grilled cheese sandwiches since you were a young child. For whatever reasons, our parents thought it was a good idea to feed us mass amounts of cheese that isn’t healthy for us but is still so good. We crave cheese similarly to how we crave sugar, cigarettes, and even cannabis. Little do you know, the ooey gooeyness that makes a grilled cheese so perfect becomes exponentially better with the addition of cannabis.

The classic way to make grilled cheese is simple, unhealthy, and capable. All you need is two slices of bread, butter, cheese, and a toaster or stove top depending on how much of a “chef” you really want to be. With the addition of cannabis, one of the tastiest meals ever to be created can become even more delicious. Watch Herb’s video below and follow their instructions for making a delicious cannabis-infused grilled cheese.

Why There Is No Best App For Weed Users

In today’s cannabis industry, there are a few weed technology apps who are really starting to carve out their niche. One such company is Leafly, a cannabis resource website most well known for their strain guide and dispensary locator. You can actually find Green Rush listed on their site here right now. Even with the growing popularity of companies like Weedmaps, Leafly, and Massroots, none of them are really able to reach their full potential until federal laws change. Rather than make a ‘best app’ list, we would rather talk about the fact that there is no best app for weed users and that the current line of apps aren’t that great thanks to the laws of the land. The GR team really started to think about why there are really no best apps out there and we came up with five main reasons that should help you understand our thinking.

Why There Is No Best App For Weed

  1. What makes each company’s directory for cannabis shops and strains so different from everyone else’s? Not much, which means there’s nobody else doing it as good as Leafly.
  2.  The apps provide a bunch of different ways to network with people you don’t know because all of your real friends aren’t on it, they’re on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat.
  3.  Personal security is basically thrown out the window. Why do these damn things ask for so many data permissions?
  4. Since your data is a product. These companies want to sell you to someone. Read the fine print.
  5. Cannabis games!  Did anyone read do their research? 99.9% of laws say you aren’t supposed to market to the underage.

Here in Seattle, the majority of people utilize Leafly.com because they’re able to learn about marijuana as well as locate the best deals from local retailers. As a user of both the web platform and mobile app, we find their work to be the most consistent by far. To date, we’ve never had the app crash, direct us to the wrong retailer, or give me any grief whatsoever, whereas the rest of the weed-centric apps are all average at best, especially the games.

Does anyone really know how cannabis games are legal at the end of the day? If you do, please let us know!

Locktite Strain Spotlight

Locktite is the beautiful love child of Gorilla Glue #4 and Mt Rainier. Another exclusive from Green Rush Lead Grower Blake Brush, formerly of RedEyed Genetics. Locktite is a sativa-hybrid that is testing upwards of 24 percent. “Our goal with Locktite was to add structure to the Gorilla Glue #4 and tighten up the internodes,” per RedEyed Genetics on Seed Finder. Gorilla Glue #4 by Josey Whales is a staple parent in many of Green Rush’s exclusive strains. The bag appeal and strong hybrid effects, that will lean sativa or indica, depending on who you ask.

Mt. Rainier is the product of crossing Northern Lights #5 and White Lotus. Named after the Pacific Northwest mountain for the blizzard of trichomes covering the flowers. This strain carries the visual ascetics from the White Lotus and the relaxing indica effects from the Northern lights lineage. Mt. Rainier is a heavy indica-hybrid that is all about effect. The White Lotus has a citrus terpene profile and strong indica effects that aid with depression, via Leafly.

Locktite Strain Spotlight

The Locktite flowers have a large, fluffy structure. The pale green flower allows the thick orange hairs and slathering of trichomes that take center stage. Smoking this, you get a citrus and diesel aroma from the White Lotus that has stimulating mental effects. A powerful body relaxation right behind it from the Northern Lights. This is a good strain for day and night time use, just make sure you clear your schedule to take advantage of Locktite’s potent effects. Just as the name suggests, Locktite will lock you down.

Tangelina Jolie Strain Spotlight

Tangelina Jolie from Green Rush has a fantastic name with genetics and history to match.

Her mother is Tangie from DNA Genetics. Also, known as Tangerine Dream, it’s a cross of Cali-O and a Skunk hybrid. She has a tall and fluffy grow structure, so make sure you have enough grow space. The citrus aromas are most likely evidence of a limonene heavy terpene profile.

“Tangie is the closest thing I could find to Orange Crush cut in seed form,” Blake Brush said, Lead Grower for Green Rush. Orange Crush is a sativa-dominant hybrid that is known for its heavy orange aroma profile. The father is Epoxy OG from RedEyed Genetics. Brush, founded RedEyed Genetics before pursuing opportunities in Washington’s I-502 recreational market with Green Rush. Now, his family runs the company.

When he was still with RedEyed, with got permission to use the original Gorilla Glue 4 from its creator Josey Whales. Gorilla Glue 4 is still one of the most common and popular strain in Washington’s recreation market, a lot of that because of the strains awesome bag appeal. It has a fluffy sativa nug structure and hits like an indica. RedEyed created Epoxy OG by Crossing Josey Whale’s original Gorilla Glue 4 with Double Barrel OG.

Tangelina Jolie Strain Spotlight

Tangelina Jolie Strain Spotlight

“For those of you wondering what Double Barrel OG consists of: White Fire OG x Raskals OG. Absolutely top shelf flowers reeking of straight gas, diesel, and more gas with a thick coating of classic OG funk,” per the RedEyed Genetics website.

Tangelina Jolie exists for Brush’s love for orange and citrus terpenes. He crossed the Tangie with two male Epoxy OG plants in the pollination process to keep the gene pool as open as possible, Brush explained. The result is a very orange-citrus tasting O.G. kush like, sativa-hybrid.

“This is where my passion for weed comes to a point. I love strong tasting orange, I just love the orange terpene profile. It’s just something I’ve always been passionate about,” Brush exuded

Crown Royal OG | Strain Spotlight

The Crown Royal OG strain from Green Rush was bred and crafted by their Lead Grower Blake Brush, formerly of RedEyed Genetics. Crown Royal OG has an extensive genealogy, making it one of the most exclusive and historical strains Green Rush has to offer.

“Crow Royal OG is by far one of my favorite strains I’ve bred. Straight up gasoline terpenes with a beautiful chemical OG backend,” Brush wrote on his Instagram about Crown Royal OG.

The high from the Crown Royal OG is a potent hybrid effect. A noticeable stoney feeling behind the eyes and mental stimulation come on right away. There’s some cerebral raciness with this strain, telling of the Chemdawg genetics. The peak of this high can be rather intense,  If you’re prone to paranoia when you consume cannabis, avoid this strain before bed time.

Crown Royal OG is a cross Royal Chem and Epoxy OG. Epoxy OG finished 2nd place in the 2016 Seeker Cup. Epoxy OG is the product of Josey Whales’ original Gorilla Glue #4 and Double Barrel OG. Gorilla Glue #4 is a two-time Cannabis Cup winner and is consistently a top seller in Washington’s recreational market. Royal Chem is crossed between Chemdawg 91 and Deadhead OG. Chemdawg 91 was used to make Royal Chem and Deadhead OG. The Chemdawg family are usually potent hybrids known for their diesel and skunky aroma profile. The Chemdawg’s have strong head and body effects.

Crown Royal OG has the diesel skunkyness from the mysterious Chemdawg family line and all the bag appeal from the Gorilla Glue #4. Making this a sativa-hybrid with bud structure that resembles a dank indica. Small dense nugs that are covered in trichomes. The hairs are sparse, but thick and vibrant orange.

This strain would be great for a day time smoke sesh and is recommended for the veteran smoker. This strain is surprisingly potent for only testing slightly above 18 percent. Crown Royal OG’s Chemdawg lineage combined with Epoxy OG’s Gorilla Glue influence makes for an incredibly strong effect. Crown Royal is a great example of why you shouldn’t choose cannabis strictly on potency numbers. A strains terpene profile is just as important for effect. Pay attention to how a strain makes you feel. For the ones you like, find strains with similar lineage and there is a good chance you will find a similar effect.
