California’s Cannabis Market Going Through Tough Times

Now that 2019 is officially in full swing, cannabis and hemp remain a hot topic. Predictions for California cannabis yearly revenue went up month by month in 2018 and investments started to really come into the industry. With so much change going on, general consumers outside of California haven’t experienced the noticeable different across the sunshine state.

Although recreational cannabis was legalized, the California Bureau of Cannabis Control announced in January of 2018 that medical collectives were only allowed to operate through the end of the year without state permits towards the licensed recreational industry. This means that thousands of co-ops and collectives were allowed to exist with millions of pounds of cannabis cultivated and processed into various types of products.

Many companies have been operating in both the medical and recreational markets since legalization. Some would say that the majority of people from medical days are still leveraging every single day for profit. MJBizDaily’s report shared that medical marijuana collectives and cooperatives became illegal without a state license on January 10th, 2019.

Collectives or co-ops operating without a state permit after Jan. 10th could be raided by law enforcement and potentially shut down, with the employees and operators facing possible criminal charges and civil fines.

The recreational side (Prop 64) has provided flashier customer experiences but there is limited access to licensed retailers across the state. For years, the medical side (Prop 215) has given cannabis patients the ability to connect with collectives and trusted growers all over California. The legislation is stifling a community that needs a long term solution in order to grow and flourish.

PTSD & Cannabis: Watch This Video To Learn More

“Marijuana use for medical conditions is an issue of growing concern. Some Veterans use marijuana to relieve symptoms of PTSD and several states specifically approve the use of medical marijuana for PTSD. However, controlled studies have not been conducted to evaluate the safety or effectiveness of medical marijuana for PTSD. Thus, there is no evidence at this time that marijuana is an effective treatment for PTSD. In fact, research suggests that marijuana can be harmful to individuals with PTSD.” – U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

The video below does a good job of showing what life might be like for some U.S. vets who are suffering from PTSD. Watch the video and let us know what you think in the comments.

Watch U.S. Vets With PTSD Smoke Weed

Traumatic stress comes in all shapes and sizes and affects everyone differently. The Department of Veterans Affairs website states that there are numerous problems associated with marijuana use.

  1. “Marijuana use is associated with medical and psychiatric problems. These problems may be caused by using, but they also may reflect the characteristics of the people who use marijuana.”
  2. “Medical problems include chronic bronchitis, abnormal brain development among early adolescent initiators, and impairment in short-term memory, motor coordination and the ability to perform complex psychomotor tasks such as driving.”
  3. “Psychiatric problems include psychosis and impairment in cognitive ability. Quality of life can also be affected through poor life satisfaction, decreased educational attainment, and increased sexual risk-taking behavior. Chronic marijuana use also can lead to addiction, with an established and clinically significant withdrawal syndrome.”

The Green Rush team is full of people who come from many different backgrounds.

Recently, one of our team member’s family members showed us this video from Stranger Buds that features U.S. Veterans with PTSD smoking weed. Although cannabis use is not yet approved by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, post-traumatic stress disorder affects a very large amount of people worldwide and cannabis has proven itself to be an effective solution for many people.

With so many people needing legitimate help and guidance when it comes to cannabis and trauma, we encourage our readers to reach out if ever in need. We’re able to connect our fans and readers to quality budtenders and medical marijuana consults if needed.

What Is A Vaporizer? #CatchTheRush

What Is A Vaporizer?

The idea behind vaporizers is to ignite cannabis using a heating coil instead of an open flame. A vape pen is exactly what it sounds like, a pen-shaped device that contains a rechargeable battery and heating element.

It didn’t take long for the convenience and discrete aspects of e-cigarettes to be adapted for cannabis concentrates, and it’s quickly becoming a normal way to consume cannabis. If you’re looking to get a vape pen and see what the rage is all about, here is a quick start guide for new users.

There are three kinds of vape pens you can get:

Thereare pens designed for vape cartridges. You buy the battery unit separately and the cartridges are screwed on like the lid of a beverage. The battery is recharged and reused and the cartridges are easily switched out if you want to smoke something specific in the morning and something during the night.

Second, are units designed to manually load your own cannabis or concentrate on a per hit basis. These are more advanced and left for someone who is familiar with dabbing.

Third, is a fully disposable unit with everything included. The battery, heating element and oil are all self-contained in the device and can be disposed of when it’s empty. This is the easiest entry point for vaporizing and doesn’t take much explanation. Just open the package, suck on the mouthpiece and enjoy the experience.

How To Select A Battery

If you want to avoid the full disposable unit, I suggest purchasing a push button battery. Optimum and Vuber make ok devices. The device pictured above has three different heat settings, depending on the amount of oil you want to inhale per hit or the type of cartridge you have. It has an LED light that lets you know when the battery is fully charged or dead. You can turn the device off with five quick clicks of the button. This saves power and keeps them from activating within your pocket or purse.

These usually run between $15 and $20 and can be found at most recreational shops. Find a budtender you trust and ask them for recommendations.

How To Select And Use A Cartridge

This decision can be more difficult to make because of the sheer amount of options you have. Type of concentrate, brand, and price are just a few of the options you must weigh before making a decision.

Please take into consideration that price points can be different from shop to shop, but price points for a quality half gram cartridges range from $40 to $60, usually. That seems expensive, but cartridges will last upwards of two weeks for the average user.

Using a cartridge is easy. Just line up the threads and screw it on top of the pen. Set your temperature on the battery, and push and hold the button to inhale. The LED light will light up, letting you know it’s heating and will disable automatically after each hit or after you let go of the button.

Setting the temperature is important for the vaping experience you’re looking for. The lowest temperature is designed to be as discrete as possible, uses the least amount of oil per hit and allows the strain’s taste and flavor to shine through. This setting is best for rookie vapers or smokers.

The middle setting will allow you larger hits, but you use a bit more oil and get less flavor.

The highest setting is designed for veterans who are looking to blow fat clouds and get stoned to the bone. This setting will sour the taste, use more oil, but you’re getting the largest hits possible from a vape pen.

Each setting has positives and negatives depending on your desired experience. I suggest trying them all out in every situation to see which combination best suits you.

Low Temp Dabs: What You Should Know

Anyone who has been dabbing or smoking concentrates for a long time has most likely taken dabs off a hot nail. Red hot, or even being close to red hot, isn’t the proper way to dab.

Nobody knows any better at first. You attempt to dab like you smoke weed, just put heat to solvent and get high, but through the years of trial and error and learn there is a lot more subtlety and technique to dab the correct way.

If you’ve ever heard of low temp dabbing, now is the time to learn what’ve you’ve been missing. The easiest way to make sure your dab is low temperature is simply by using your stopwatch app on your smartphone. Set it up and fire up your torch. Heat your torch up and when it starts glowing red/orange, hit the lap button.

Now you’re letting the nail cooldown watch your timer.

The amount of time you let the nail cool down really depends on the type of nail, let’s just say it’s quartz. Most quartz nails take at least 45 seconds to cool down before you hit the correct temperature.

If it’s thick like a 4mm, then you will want to wait up to a minute and thirty seconds.

There will be a three to five dab practice period when you’re zeroing the timing of your nail.

If you see the remaining oil in your nail is black or its crusted to the nail, it was too hot when you did you dab. You want a warm brown puddle for remains. This will make for easy clean up with Q-tips. If you didn’t get it all cleaned quite quickly enough, you can burn off the rest with your torch with ease.

Learn more about the benefits of low-temperature dabs and techniques with these materials.

A Thorough Guide To Choosing The Right Marijuana (Part 1)

We’re almost two years into the world of legal cannabis and the world of marijuana is still just as confusing as ever. There are an endless amount of products and strains, plus, how many shops can they really pack into Seattle?

When you visit a legal shop, we recommend selecting one of our partners. All recreational weed retailers have many products on the shelves and oftentimes the number of options overwhelms new cannabis users. Smoking, vaping, pills, and eating or drinking infused products are just a few of the popularized consumption methods in Washington state.

Regardless of how you consume cannabis, there are three industry terms (popularized by Leafly.com) that many people use to identify each type. Sativa (S), Indica (I), and Hybrid (H). In order to choose the marijuana experience that is best suited for you, it’s important to understand each classification and try to remember the flavors that you enjoy.

Each of the different types of cannabis are known to produce specific effects depending on the strain. Some can give you bursts of creative energy, induce anxiety, or help with focus, while others can relax you, sedate you, or aid with appetite loss.

Now that we know about the different types and kinds of effects, it is important the user asks themselves how they want to feel after having consumed the marijuana. One of the best ways someone can identify a product that is right for them is by them communicating their needs or wants with the shop’s staff.

Choosing The Right Marijuana: Terpenes

A good place to start is by asking yourself if you want energy or if you want to feel sleepy. The next question could maybe be about the fact you need help managing anxiety or finding a way to increase your appetite. Depending on what you want to do, a really good budtender can almost always find something that has been known to help. A good example is that many people don’t actually enjoy smoking. Communicating a desire to stay away from smoking is actually very helpful and I always suggest taking the time to focus on the creation of a strong relationship with your budtender. That way they can take care of you. Once your relationship with them is strong and your budtender can begin to identify what kind of high you’re looking to experience, they can dial in the right terpenes and flavor profiles to have you flying high all day and night. This little extra knowledge could help you to consistently smoke better or to even teach others how to use marijuana in an effective way.

Choosing The Right Marijuana: Edibles (Myths)

America has an endless supply of potent cannabis flower, delicious infused candies, cookies, chocolates, and beverages, and at this point, we all know that finding something tasty isn’t that difficult. Sharing stories with your budtender about what products you’ve tried and whether or not they were good or bad, is a huge part of the learning process with cannabis. For those of you who haven’t tried a cannabis-infused edible or drink, we recommend you visit one of our reputable retail partners and letting the staff know it’s your first time. Tell them the GreenRush team sent you their way!

Things To Know When Buying Dabs In Washington

Even when it comes to concentrates and other extracts, many people are currently visiting weed stores and asking for whatever has the highest THC. While the THC percentage is in fact a vital part of the purchasing experience, there is more to value than just high percentages.

One of the first and most important things you should be looking for at weed stores is who the experts are.  You’ve got to find budtenders you can trust!

Identify Dabbing Experts

By now you should be shopping for dabs and have gotten used to asking the budtender for information about what they like. If you don’t ask the budtender about what they’re smoking or dabbing, how can you know that they’re not feeding you a blind recommendation? Always engage in a thoughtful conversation with your budtenders so that they can identify themselves as dabbing experts or send you to the right person.

When it comes to RSO, CBD, and other medical marijuana-centric products, it is especially important to ask for a staff member who has experience using and selling these types of items.

It is extremely important to look and listen for a budtender or manager that is educated about the products people are asking about. If a staff member can only describe the products as dank, top-shelf, great, fire, super good, awesome, or any other basic positive adjective, double down on another question to see if they really know if it’s worth spending money on.

Consumers aren’t able to view the product outside of packaging in Washington state so it is extremely important for cannabis industry staff to be able to communicate accurate information. Overdosing on cannabis can ruin someone’s perspective and is one of the major hurdles holding many people back when it comes to legalization.

I follow this simple rule when it comes to dabs. If the budtenders haven’t tried it and nobody actually knows if the product is effective or tastes good, I’ll generally pass until next time. When it comes to our products though, GreenRush extracts with flower and our price point is usually cheaper than other top-shelf extract companies.

Brand Knowledge

There are seemingly thousands of brands that work in cannabis here in Washington. Many of these companies, ours included, offer cannabis in flower and oils. Some even take it a step further by creating edibles, lotions, topicals, and other cannabis-based products. If you keep an eye out for brands that focus more on education, flavor, experience, or lifestyle, you should be able to set yourself up for success.

GreenRush’s extracts are pesticide-free and our facility is known for cleanliness. If you’d like to know specific terpene profiles for our flower or oils, send us a DM on Instagram or Facebook.

Flavor & Terpenes Matter More Than THC %

For the last two years, Washington’s cannabis industry has battled with the importance of the THC percentages. All cannabis in Washington has to get tested at an accredited facility and there have been quite a few issues with this process thus far. Although THC predominately focuses on psychoactive effects, terpenes and THC combine to create a synergistic effect that can dictate specific types of effects or highs.

Adults 21 and over can purchase up to one ounce of usable cannabis flower, 16 ounces of cannabis-infused edibles in solid form, 72 ounces of cannabis drinkables, and 7 grams of cannabis concentrates.

If you’re a registered medical cannabis patient, the limits are:

Three ounces of usable cannabis flower, forty-eight ounces of cannabis-infused edibles in solid form, two hundred sixteen ounces of cannabis drinkables, and twenty-one grams of cannabis concentrates, per the Washington State Department of Health.
