Things To Know When Buying Dabs In Washington

Even when it comes to concentrates and other extracts, many people are currently visiting weed stores and asking for whatever has the highest THC. While the THC percentage is in fact a vital part of the purchasing experience, there is more to value than just high percentages.

One of the first and most important things you should be looking for at weed stores is who the experts are.  You’ve got to find budtenders you can trust!

Identify Dabbing Experts

By now you should be shopping for dabs and have gotten used to asking the budtender for information about what they like. If you don’t ask the budtender about what they’re smoking or dabbing, how can you know that they’re not feeding you a blind recommendation? Always engage in a thoughtful conversation with your budtenders so that they can identify themselves as dabbing experts or send you to the right person.

When it comes to RSO, CBD, and other medical marijuana-centric products, it is especially important to ask for a staff member who has experience using and selling these types of items.

It is extremely important to look and listen for a budtender or manager that is educated about the products people are asking about. If a staff member can only describe the products as dank, top-shelf, great, fire, super good, awesome, or any other basic positive adjective, double down on another question to see if they really know if it’s worth spending money on.

Consumers aren’t able to view the product outside of packaging in Washington state so it is extremely important for cannabis industry staff to be able to communicate accurate information. Overdosing on cannabis can ruin someone’s perspective and is one of the major hurdles holding many people back when it comes to legalization.

I follow this simple rule when it comes to dabs. If the budtenders haven’t tried it and nobody actually knows if the product is effective or tastes good, I’ll generally pass until next time. When it comes to our products though, GreenRush extracts with flower and our price point is usually cheaper than other top-shelf extract companies.

Brand Knowledge

There are seemingly thousands of brands that work in cannabis here in Washington. Many of these companies, ours included, offer cannabis in flower and oils. Some even take it a step further by creating edibles, lotions, topicals, and other cannabis-based products. If you keep an eye out for brands that focus more on education, flavor, experience, or lifestyle, you should be able to set yourself up for success.

GreenRush’s extracts are pesticide-free and our facility is known for cleanliness. If you’d like to know specific terpene profiles for our flower or oils, send us a DM on Instagram or Facebook.

Flavor & Terpenes Matter More Than THC %

For the last two years, Washington’s cannabis industry has battled with the importance of the THC percentages. All cannabis in Washington has to get tested at an accredited facility and there have been quite a few issues with this process thus far. Although THC predominately focuses on psychoactive effects, terpenes and THC combine to create a synergistic effect that can dictate specific types of effects or highs.

Adults 21 and over can purchase up to one ounce of usable cannabis flower, 16 ounces of cannabis-infused edibles in solid form, 72 ounces of cannabis drinkables, and 7 grams of cannabis concentrates.

If you’re a registered medical cannabis patient, the limits are:

Three ounces of usable cannabis flower, forty-eight ounces of cannabis-infused edibles in solid form, two hundred sixteen ounces of cannabis drinkables, and twenty-one grams of cannabis concentrates, per the Washington State Department of Health.

Legal Cannabis Purchasing Limits In Washington

Forms of cannabis outside of flower have evolved to fit the consumer market. With legalization and strict regulation from the government, there have been strict limits imposed. These limits impact the amount of cannabis that someone can have with them and/or purchase from a recreational store. These legal limits exist to regulate the market and deter people from selling weed for personal profit.

There are a few basic forms of cannabis that must be discussed. Each of these forms has a strict legal limit that comes with. First, it is important to understand the basic forms of cannabis before the limits are introduced. Following these limits is important because they allow our market in Washington to continue to grow.

Flower: This is the most common form of cannabis you are going to find. Before the product has been extracted to turn into oil, or combined with butter or cooking oil to create edibles. Adults, who are over 21, are able to purchase up to one ounce of 28 grams of flower. Cannabis flower comes in a variety of weights from grams to full ounces. You can mix and match as much as you want, but be sure to stay at or below that 28-gram limit.

Oil: More potent than flower, this highly concentrated form of THC is extracted using butane or other extraction methods. Similar to flower there are limits on the amount of oil an adult is able to purchase at one time. In Washington, adults are limited to purchasing 7 grams of oil at one time. Concentrates typically come in gram packages, occasionally you’ll find half grams. You could buy 7 different grams of concentrates and have hit your legal limit for the day.

Edibles: There is a maximum of 16 ounces of edibles in solid form that an adult can purchase at one time. This can be one individual serving, which is highly unlikely, or it can be divided among multiple servings. Washington State has a 10mg per serving limit on edibles. However, you are able to buy packages with up to 100mg of total THC. Meaning, your edibles will be broken up into 10 servings of 10mg each. Edibles are not always packed in singles or tens, but there is a 10mg per serving limit. This is where companies have found methods to deliver more THC to their consumers by breaking up large edibles into 10mg servings. I wouldn’t recommend it, but you could eat 100mg of cannabis from a package of 10 edibles.

Cannabis also comes in a liquid form, specifically tinctures, and drinks. An adult consumer is able to purchase 72 ounces of cannabis-infused liquid.

What’s Not Allowed?

There are products that are not able to be infused with cannabis. The packaging also cannot appeal to children. You wouldn’t want your kid eating a heavily medicated package of skittles, would you? Fruit and juices are not allowed to be infused. This helps prevent children from eating things that they are not meant to eat. Dried meats, dairy products, and any pie that contains egg cannot be loaded with weed according to the Canna Law Group. Some of these laws may seem to be a little strange or strict, but compromises had to be made in order for I-502 to be successful in Washington.

Washington’s Edibles

There are numerous companies in Washington meeting the edible needs of cannabis consumers. Even with strict regulations on what can and cannot be sold, there is a wide variety of products available. Recently a THC infused sriracha sauce hit the market. Ciders, waters, brownies, gummies, and mints are also available. Essentially you are not limited by many dietary restrictions or by your taste buds.

If you’re a registered medical cannabis patient, the limits are three ounces of usable cannabis flower, forty-eight ounces of cannabis-infused edibles in solid form, two hundred sixteen ounces of cannabis drinkables, and twenty-one grams of cannabis concentrates, per the Washington State Department of Health.

Learn About Low Temperature Dabbing

The Oregonian released a story citing a study by Portland State University chemistry professor Robert Strongin. The article states carcinogens are released when terpenes present in butane hash oil (BHO) are vaporized on nails at temperatures above 750 degrees Fahrenheit and 932 degrees Fahrenheit.  Methacrolein and benzene are the carcinogens in question, respectively.

BHO concentrates are a staple in the recreational scene. Many of the notable extraction companies use butane to extract the THC, CBD, and terpenes from the plant material which leaves the final solvent that is dabbed. The excess butane and other impurities are purged out with heat and what’s left is your concentrate. Slight variations of extraction variables paired with different cannabis strains is what gives you all of your many concentrate varieties. The Oregonian doesn’t specify what brand of concentrates were used in the study, only the terpene profiles and that they were BHO.

“We don’t want to say things like this are just bad,” Strongin told The Oregonian. “It really depends on the user.”

The temperature goal for successful low temp dabbing is between 350 and 400 degrees Fahrenheit, High Times reports. This allows the cannabinoids and terpenes to melt all the way; providing the full spectrum of the strain’s effect without burning your throat and scorching the flavor. The most popular type of equipment used for low temp dabbing is a type of nail called a “quartz banger,” which is a small bucket that you scoop your dabs into. Pair this with carb cap that acts as a seal to retain as much heat in the nail as possible to melt the dab and cut down on waste.  Quartz is the most popular because it heats up relatively quickly and has great retention properties.

Will Linn is the Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Northwest Cannabis Solutions. He’s an experienced concentrate connoisseur and knows the importance of regulating the temperature on your dab rig nail.

The smaller the dab, the less you will want the nail to heat up, and vice-versa. You will know if your nail is too hot because the remnant oil will be a singed and black instead  warm and brown. It should be  easily cleaned up with a Q-tip. Cleaning your nail after every dab will keep your nail fresh for months and keep your dabs tasting clean. An electronic nail provides an easier way to experience low temp dabs, but it can be costly if you want a reliable set-up. Consistently dabbing a torch and nail at low temperatures is absolutely possible, it just takes research and practice.

“Preference is part of it, but you never want to get any concentrate too hot, Linn said.” “It burns away the terpenes, which in effect takes away from the taste and the potency of the product.”

There are several factors to consider when your cooling down your nail, but the most important part is to have the same starting point for every dab; so heat the nail red hot, until it’s slightly glowing orange. A nail that is visibly glowing orange or red will be around 800 degrees Fahrenheit, per High Times. Let it cool down from this point for anywhere from 45 seconds to a minute and 30 seconds depending on the thickness of your nail and the size of your dab. Linn explains there will be a trial and error period for each nail and type of solvent (rosin, distillate, shatter, etc,) to zero in the heat to maximize the taste and effect.

“Most people take minimally sized dabs compared to some of the dabs I’ve taken,” Linn continued, “it depends on where people are at with their tolerance level.”

GreenRush Cannabis is a WA i502 producer-processor located in the scenic Snohomish Valley. We produce a clean, sophisticated crop that has become a preferred brand for a number of top shops in Washington state known for our consistent terpene flavor, high quality, and deep impact.
